Who I am, Who I aspire to be...
Jordyn Hendley was born in New Jersey, raised in Tampa, Florida, and now lives in McDonough, Georgia. Her single mother, family, and support community encouraged her to pursue as many avenues as possible, and that she did. She became active in community endeavors such as Girl Scouts, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and STEMXposure - an effort to expose youth in underrepresented communities to the fields of STEM. Her introduction to medicine began as a student of George S. Middleton Magnet High School's Biomedical Biotechnology Magnet Program. Jordyn additionally engaged Student Government Council as Vice President, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) 2x National Competitor, Model United Nations as President, Girl's Soccer Team as Captain #4, and a Track & Field sprinter. Outside of school, she volunteered at Dr. Jawan C. Ayer-Cole, M.D. Hematology and Oncology practice or with Metropolitan Ministries - an organization designed to aid at-risk and homeless families in underserved and impoverished communities. ​
After graduating from George S. Middleton's Biomedical Biotechnology Magnet Program, Jordyn got accepted into the Naval ROTC scholarship program at George Washington University - the most competitive Naval ROTC program in the country - whilst enrolled at Howard University. As a full-time student, she study psychology on the pre-med track, while also tending to patients as a certified Personal Care Giver of Capital City Nurses. She interested in pursuing a career in either OB/GYN medicine to combat the Black Maternal Health Crisis or forensic physiatry to investigate the misdiagnosis of mental and behavioral health and mass incarceration of Black and Brown youth. She currently serves as a Howard University Ambassador, Public Relations Chair of the Women in Pre-Med Howard Chapter, and a Social Media Graphics Designer for Reformed University Fellowship at Howard. As a Student Ambassador, she actively engages with prospective students via campus tours and offer personal mentorship to those interested. Being an E-Board member of the Women in Pre-Med Howard Chapter gives Jordyn an additional opportunity to be a pre-professional mentor and also utilize her graphic design skills to creatively engage with members via social media. Lastly, the Reformed University Fellowship at Howard University allows Jordyn to serve others by practicing her faith and weekly encouraging participants to join the organization as a graphic designer of the social media leadership team. When her schedule allows, Jordyn additionally participate in organizations such as HU Imprint (a first generation in college organization), the Comprehensive Medical Mentorship Program (a competitive pre-med program), and the HU Psychology Club Mentorship Program.
On her free time, if she's not being mentored by Mandi Brooks, PA, Radiation Oncology through Big Brothers Big Sisters, Jordyn is conducting independent IRB-approved research, brushing up on her graphic design skills, and working out! As a student researcher on “Intimate Spaces in Various Places: Black Birth Doulas’ Experiences Caring for Black Pregnant and Postpartum People”, Jordyn assists investigate the effectiveness of Black Doulas in birthing centers, hospitals, and in carceral spaces, as well as their care for pre and postpartum persons. Jordyn works closely with Ph.D. Candudate Denae Bradley, M.A. and Sociology M.A. Candidate Gabrielle Vincent. She also intends to launch her graphic design business by the end of the summer - which would specialize in social media management, flyer designs, and professional development templates. Jordyn is also initiating a mentorship non-profit organization for underprivileged Black and Brown students, connecting them to HBCU alumna. To continue with her passion for giving back to the community, Jordyn will participate in CECAT's Oaxaca Summer 2024 Study Abroad program to learn Spanish whilst learning more about Western Medical practices in LatinX and Hispanic Communities.
